October/November is when most puff backs will happen. A puff back is when an oil burner back fires and send soot all over your house. They commonly occur when your furnace starts up for the first time in the fall.
When this happens you will need to clean every item in your home, even items in your draws. Soot will become acidic when introduced to moisture and begin to pit your counter tops, bathroom fixtures, door handles if left untreated for over a week. Soot is also a know carcinogen and should be cleaned professionally for this reason alone. Most all puff backs are covered under your home owners policy.
